D&D 5e HP by Class — Hit Dice & Average HP Table

Every D&D 5th Edition class uses one of four hit dice (d6, d8, d10, or d12), which determines how much HP you gain each level. This table shows the hit die and average HP gained per level (beyond level 1) for all 13 classes.

How these numbers are calculated

Level 1 HP is always your hit die's maximum value plus your Constitution modifier — no rolling or averaging at level 1. For every level after that, the "Average" method uses half your hit die rounded up, plus 1 (e.g. a d10 gives (10÷2)+1 = 6 average HP per level), plus your Constitution modifier each level. Rolling instead uses an actual die roll for the same range.

Level 1 HP isn't shown as a single number here because it depends on your Constitution modifier, which varies per character — use the formula shown, or plug your numbers into the calculator below.

Multiclassing? Only your character's true starting level uses the maxed hit die — the calculator now handles the rest automatically.
